The Castañeda Firm’s Chrysta Castañeda has been selected to the 2022 edition of Texas Super Lawyers in recognition of her achievements in energy and natural resources law. This honor follows her 2023 selection to The Best Lawyers in America for her work in a similar category last month.
“Chrysta is knowledgeable, dependable, and a force to be reckoned with at the negotiating table and in the courtroom,” said Miriam Sweetin, an energy client of the firm. “The depth of her understanding of the Texas oil and gas industry is unrivaled by any other attorney. I wouldn’t work with anyone else.”
Castañeda is currently serving in her second year of a three-year term on the Council of the Oil, Gas and Energy Resources Law section of the State Bar of Texas, the oldest – and one of the largest – sections of the State Bar. She was also the 2020 Democratic nominee for Texas Railroad Commissioner, which oversees Texas’ oil and gas industry.
Prior to holding these distinguished positions, Castañeda co-authored The Last Trial of T. Boone Pickens, a nonfiction work that recounts her experience as the lead counsel on legendary oilman T. Boone Pickens’ trial team litigating Mesa Petroleum Partners LP v. Baytech LLP, et al. Initially considered a “small contract matter,” it evolved into one of the biggest verdicts of 2016. The book was named a finalist for the Independent Book Publishers Association’s 2021 Benjamin Franklin Award, and the case was selected for the National Law Journal’s Verdicts Hall of Fame in 2020.
Castañeda also frequently speaks with the media on the intersection of energy production and governance, and how it impacts Texans. This April, she was part of an all-female slate of appellate advocates arguing in Texas' historic Winter Storm Uri case.
